1. What happens if I run out of propane?
Running out is inconvenient and expensive:
- Your appliances shut off (no heat, hot water, or cooking)

- Emergency delivery fees often apply
- In winter, frozen pipes can result if you lose heat for extended periods

2. Can I switch providers mid-winter?
Yes, but timing matters:
- If you own your tank, switching is easy—just schedule a delivery with us
- If you lease, factor in 1-2 weeks for new tank installation
- During peak demand (December–February), delivery slots may be limited
Best practice: Switch in spring or summer when demand is low and you have time to evaluate providers without the pressure of an empty tank.
3. How accurate are automatic delivery predictions?
Automatic delivery systems are typically within 10-15% of actual usage, but they rely on:
- Historical usage data (your past 1-2 years)
- Weather forecasts (degree days)
- Manual adjustments (if you report changes)
They can be thrown off by:
- Unusually cold or warm weather
- New appliances or changes in household size
- Extended vacations or absences
- Aging equipment (using more fuel than it should)

4. Do I need to be home for a propane delivery?
Usually not. Propane deliveries are "drop and go" in most cases:
- Our driver parks near your tank, connects the hose, fills your tank, and leaves a delivery receipt
- Exception: First delivery at a new location (driver may need to verify tank setup and placement)
- Exception: Any delivery requiring safety inspections or equipment adjustments
You'll receive a delivery receipt showing gallons delivered and price per gallon.
5. Is propane cheaper than natural gas?
Per unit, natural gas is cheaper—but propane is more energy-dense.
Energy comparison:
- Propane: 91,500 BTU per gallon
- Natural gas: ~100,000 BTU per therm (but requires roughly 2x the volume to deliver the same heat output)
To compare costs fairly:
- Multiply the propane price per gallon by 1.087 = equivalent natural gas price per therm
- Or multiply the natural gas price per therm by 0.92 = equivalent propane price per gallon
Example:
- Propane at $2.50/gallon = $2.72/therm equivalent
- Natural gas at $1.50/therm = $1.38/gallon propane equivalent
Propane advantages:
- Available anywhere (no pipeline required—critical in rural North Central Texas)
- Works during power outages (generators, backup heat)
- More reliable in extreme weather
Natural gas advantages:
- Lower per-unit cost (where available)
- No tank refills needed (continuous supply via pipeline)
Bottom line: If natural gas is available in your area and you don't need backup power, it may be slightly cheaper. But most of rural Hood, Parker, Johnson, and Somervell counties don't have natural gas lines—making propane the only option.
6. How long does a propane tank last?
The fuel lasts indefinitely in a well-maintained tank. But the tank itself has a lifespan:
Aboveground tanks:
- Expected lifespan: 30-40 years with proper maintenance
- Requalification required: Every 10-12 years (visual inspection, pressure test)
Underground tanks:
- Expected lifespan: 20-30 years
- Corrosion risk: Higher than aboveground (sacrificial anodes must be inspected/replaced every 3-5 years)
When to replace:
- Rust/corrosion visible on tank body
- Dents, bulges, or structural damage
- Tank fails requalification inspection
- Relief valve stuck or leaking

7. Can I install a propane tank myself?
No. Texas Railroad Commission rules require licensed professionals to install propane tanks and piping. DIY installation is:
- Illegal
- Unsafe (propane leaks are explosive)
- Not covered by insurance

8. What size tank do I need?

9. Is it safe to bury a propane tank?
Yes, when installed correctly by a licensed professional. Underground tanks:
- Must be coated to prevent corrosion
- Require sacrificial anodes (replaced every 3-5 years)
- Must be 10 feet from buildings and property lines
- Are protected from weather and physical damage
- Don't take up yard space
Maintenance trade-off: Underground tanks require more frequent corrosion inspections than aboveground tanks.
10. What if I smell gas?
This is an emergency. Act immediately:
- Leave the area (don't turn lights on or off, don't use phones or electronics inside)
- Call 911 from a safe distance (neighbor's house, down the street)

What propane smells like: Rotten eggs, skunk spray, or sulfur (an additive called ethyl mercaptan is added to propane so you can detect leaks)
Do NOT:
- Try to find the leak yourself
- Light matches or operate any ignition sources
- Turn electrical switches on or off (sparks can ignite propane)
- Assume "it's just a small leak"
Propane is heavier than air and sinks to low spots (basements, crawl spaces). Even small leaks can create explosive concentrations.
