Is Your Propane Tank Winter-Ready?

Preparedness has been in the news, and a lot of you have called to ask what it means for your tank. Here is the honest answer: a 10-minute check. If your tank passes, you are set. If it doesn’t, here is exactly what to do.

The 10-minute propane check

Six steps. Most people finish in less time than it takes to read the news that sent them here.

1. Read your gauge today

Lift the dome lid on the tank and read the dial. The number is a percentage of the tank, not gallons. On a 500-gallon tank:

80% (a full fill)about 400 gallons
40%about 200 gallons
20%about 100 gallons

Under 30%? Call us for a fill. That is a routine delivery, not an emergency. Cold weather also makes the gauge read a little lower than the tank really is.

2. Know your days

How long those gallons last depends on your furnace, your water heater, and whether you run a generator. Our usage estimator does that math for your house in about a minute, and it tells you when your next fill is due.

3. Have a generator? Tell us

A standby generator under load uses propane far faster than the house does, and most tanks were sized for the house. If you have one, let us know. We size the tank and the fill schedule for the generator, not just the furnace.

4. On will-call? Book a November top-off

The problem in a hard freeze is not tank size. It is arriving at the cold week already low. A top-off in November is the whole plan: you go into winter full, on a normal route day, at a normal price.

5. Make it automatic

The Never Run Out Membership puts a monitor on your tank, so we fill it from real readings instead of waiting for your call, and it comes with the We-Make-It-Right Guarantee in writing. When seasonal demand multiplies the call volume, members’ accounts are already being managed: we see the level, we schedule the delivery, you do not have to be in the queue. From $4.99 every 4 weeks, and members can still lock a winter price with pre-buy through November 30.

6. Know your shutoff and our number

Find the service valve on top of the tank and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call us from outside. If the power goes out, a furnace blower needs electricity, but a propane cooktop and a standing-pilot water heater usually keep working. Our office is open Mon–Fri 8–5, and 817-341-7240 reaches a real person for emergencies 24/7.

What you will not hear from us

We will not tell you there is a shortage, and we will not use a scary number to make you hurry. Read your gauge, call us if it is low, and we will get you through the winter the same way we have since 2000.

Book a top-off or ask about the membership

Tell us your gauge reading and we will call you back, usually the same business day. Not a customer yet? Same form.

Straight answers

Is there a propane shortage?

Not that we can see. Our trucks are running normal November routes and we are filling tanks every day. What changes in a hard freeze is demand: a lot of people call in the same few days. That is why the check above is about your tank level, which is the one thing you control, and why a monitored tank is the calmest way to get through a cold week.

Should I buy a bigger tank?

Usually not. A monitored 500-gallon tank serves most homes through a North Texas winter with room to spare. The two exceptions are a standby generator and a very large home, and we size those case by case. Call before you buy anything.

What does the membership cost?

Basic $4.99, Care $9.99, Plus $14.99, billed every 4 weeks on a 12-month term. Every tier includes the monitor and the We-Make-It-Right Guarantee ($100, $200 or $400 if we let your monitored tank run dry through our own fault). Use 300 gallons on Basic, 600 on Care or 1,000 on Plus in a membership year and we credit that year’s fees back as propane. Full details.

I’m not a Heine customer. Can I still get ready?

Yes. Do the check with whoever fills your tank today. If you would rather have us, switching is one phone call: we handle the tank, the paperwork and the first fill, and we serve Hood, Parker, Johnson, Tarrant and Somervell counties. How a Heine winter works.
