Indefinitely. Unlike gasoline or diesel, propane does not degrade, separate, or lose potency over time, so propane that has sat unused in a tank for years is as good as the day it was delivered. The only thing with a lifespan is the container: the stationary 120- to 1,000-gallon tanks we install do not expire but should be inspected periodically, while small portable cylinders (grill tanks) must be requalified on a schedule set by the U.S. DOT. Keep the service valve closed when a tank is not in use.
A properly installed underground propane tank typically lasts 20 to 30 years, and often longer. The limiting factor is corrosion, which is why underground tanks are installed with cathodic protection (a sacrificial anode) and a corrosion-resistant coating, and why the anode should be checked periodically. Above-ground tanks commonly last 30 years or more. We install Triarc and Imperial Steel tanks and perform a leak check on every installation.

For reference, one gallon of propane weighs about 4.2 pounds, so a standard "20 lb" grill cylinder holds roughly 4.7 gallons. Stationary tanks are filled to 80% of their rated capacity to leave room for the liquid to expand with temperature, so a 500-gallon tank takes about 400 gallons on a full delivery.
Yes, with two rules. Use a light, reflective color such as white, silver, or light gray: dark colors absorb heat and raise the pressure inside the tank, which is a safety-code issue. And never paint over the valves, gauges, relief valve, or the manufacturer's data plate. Use a rust-inhibiting paint made for metal.
